What will remote work look like when the pandemic ends? Right now, it appears remote work is here to stay. 80% of executives plan to keep remote work around, and 96% of employees want it to stay in some capacity as well. Despite the benefits of remote work, 94% of professionals also report they face challenges working from home. Their biggest hurdles are tech limitations.

Weak internet disables productivity. Over a third of surveyors couldn’t complete work due to slow home internet, and over 40% used phones as hotspots during the height of COVID-19. In 2020, in-home data usage rose 38%, reaching 16.6 GB per month. Real time services, like those that enable video calls, are affected first.

More concerning than internet speed is internet security. Since transitioning to remote work, 60% of organizations report an increase in cyberattacks. The top risks are, in order: VDI or RDP, phishing, and VPN vulnerabilities. Just 44% of companies now say their security measures are effective at preventing cyberattacks, down from 71% before the pandemic.

Finally, simplicity is much desired among remote workers. Clunky VPNs and remote access software are not easy to use, making it difficult to be productive. Some resources are either unavailable or difficult to access when remote. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) creates new struggles, as a paltry 39% of organizations say they have the expertise needed to manage remote work securely.
