Despite the efforts of raising awareness on the dangers of mesothelioma, it is surprising that many remain unaware of the risks of exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. These can cause serious diseases that characteristically have poor prognosis such as mesothelioma, which develops over a long period of time. In fact, it may take 10 to 50 years before the first symptoms become visible.
During the Roman Empire, thousands of years before asbestos was considered a miracle mineral, it was already apparent that asbestos exposure caused severe pulmonary problems. However, such diseases were not linked to asbestos until it gained attention in the early 1900s.
Primarily used for its fire and heat resistant properties, asbestos was a staple element in a myriad of goods manufacture, including a wide variety of building materials. To give you more information about the dangers of mesothelioma, here’s an infographic from AWARE, an asbestos disposal and demolitions company that explains the asbestos removal process in homes.
